testing..

this was done for an art test that ends tomorrow at 11:59pm! i think these started to get unified by a few consistent details...but remain relatively diverse based on their body structures...? ultimately i decided on NO.1...the giant roach aka wretch.

back to paint!

i recently came up on some acrylic paint and man, is it sweet. maybe im just stoked on the fact that there is almost zero clean up and an incredibly short dry-time.nicholas kiripolsky: concept design artist

arg! the mobility vs. vulnerability is giving me a rough time. he should be able to walk...but the joints allowing him to move leave large holes where he would be exposed. the shoulder joint mechanism should connect the arm pieces and also provide an axis or two for movement.nicholas kiripolsky: concept design artist

done.

done.

felt like i could have gone insane working on the detailed turn arounds of this one...so i cut it short and did it a little more graphic-stylee than rendered. nicholas kiripolsky: concept design artist

Respirator 2nd Class_WIP

for the less fortunate citizens living at a lower altitude in poorer atmoshperic conditions. they cant afford to have the latest technology, so they tweak their own packs with whatever they can salvage. the top half is composed of original components, bottom half is the adapted portion.nicholas kiripolsky: concept design artist

this was more of a birth than a painting. ill be honest, at some points i considered giving up...i considered turning back, or starting a new piece. but alas, i stuck to my guns and finished (for now) a character painting.nicholas kiripolsky: concept design artist

-Minotaur-WIP

WIP. this guy is more of a hero than a villian, but the hero must slay him regardless. he is like the first failed version of the hero, prototype arm and all. he has similar abilities to manipulate magnetic fields...hes a knight..so he twists scrap metal into armor and the blade of his shattered sword. i am calling him the Minotaur for now because of his role in the story. the hero must navigate to the center of a generator (a maze-like structure) and best some opponent with untold powers. when the hero reaches the center of the maze, he faces not a monster, but a character who mirrors himself...i heard a lecture by Harvey Dinnerstein..he described the idea of the Minotaur as a conflict with yourself...so i used that idea for the knight character. is that a little convoluted?nicholas kiripolsky: concept design artist

this drawing of the motorcylce is by far the most time intensive i have ever worked on. im finding that regular illustration just has to be convincing...but this industrial design approach is about being precise. it also takes a long time before anything starts to materialize. so here is the front half...nicholas kiripolsky: concept design artist
heres what the politician will more or less look like. this page will eventually have a few more accompanying explanatory drawings of the characters head and respirator and onto an 17 x 11 format. his suit mimics an ideal physique.. underneath he is old and weak. the white suit with blue lining is meant to mislead the population that his intentions are true. the lining is able to turn from blue to red/orange displaying his malicious side. the idea for the mask came from Japanese theater costumes of demons, or 'Oni'..each one displaying a grimace.nicholas kiripolsky: concept design artist

there's this great Cramps song called 'Zombie Dance'...these drawings remind me of that song. this guy will eventually have a robot with 100 eyes on his back and some clothing, as this is maybe not the angle you want to stare at a character for any length of time.nicholas kiripolsky: concept design artist
